LASG demolishes Oshodi market, destroys goods

 

Many brokers at the Owonifari Market in the Oshodi zone of Lagos State landed at the business sector on Wednesday to meet their shops crushed and merchandise demolished by bulldozers.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the annihilation was done at around 1am by authorities of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offenses (Enforcement) Unit.

The authorities, who supposedly accompanied three bulldozers, were said to have before issued a two-week final proposal to the merchants to leave the zone.

Be that as it may, a few merchants, who talked with PUNCH Metro, guaranteed that they were given just four days.

Our journalist, who got to the scene of the destruction at around 12pm, watched that the products of the brokers were annihilated with the structures.

One of the dealers, who gave his name as Ike Uzor, said he just came back from the place where he grew up in the South-East after the Yuletide and was stunned to see that his shop and products were no more. Uzor guaranteed that he lost 15 level screens, among different merchandise.

He said, "The authorities began the procedure on Saturday at around 9pm. They captured the business sector administrator and shot teargas canisters at the brokers. That was four days back. Things being what they are, the reason would they say they are guaranteeing they gave us two weeks to pack?

"I just came back from the South-East after the Christmas and New Year festivity. We have merchandise in these shops worth a large number of naira. The authorities came in the night and annihilated our merchandise with bulldozers.

"They said they needed to utilize the spot for a Bus Rapid Transit park. Be that as it may, we have many shops in this spot, and they didn't permit us to move our merchandise. We didn't pick anything from the rubble."

Another broker, Bayo Akande, said, "My dad had two shops. I was conceived and I experienced childhood around there. There is no mischief if the administration needs to utilize the area in light of the fact that it is an open property. Be that as it may, why would it be advisable for them to wreck our products with the shops? This is evil. We didn't vote in favor of this change.

"I have likewise been working together here for around 15 years. I came toward the beginning of today to meet the spot decimated. Where do I begin from?"

PUNCH Metro watched the merchants and market ladies examining the episode and regretting their destiny.

The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, said the need to change and embellish the Oshodi range educated the pulverization.

"The Owonifari territory will be changed into a ultra present day transport terminal with new transport shields that are befitting of an organized park in a uber city," he said.

It was assembled that the Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, was at the business sector on Wednesday. He was said to have been joined by the Commissioner for the Environment, Dr Babatunde Adejare.
